About Us

Magpie Publishers is home to the Australia’s Black History series, a historical fiction series, written in consultation with Nyangbal Elders from Ballina, that explores the colonisation of Australia in the 1800s through the eyes of the Nyangbal people of Ballina.

  • Informed consent: the production of this series was authorised by Bundjalung Elders from the Nyangbal clan of Ballina. Members involved: Ricky, Eli, Glen and Kris Cook, Leonard and Ashley Moran, Jason Sines, Marcus Ferguson.
  • Right to Attribution and Naming: the author has taken great care to write this series the proper way and to acknowledge the traditional custodians, the Nyangbal people, of Ballina.
  • Control and Cultural Integrity: the author has self-published this series with the approval of the consultation group to ensure the cultural integrity of the stories and Bundjalung language used within the books.
  • Respect for Secret and Sacred Material: the myths that the books are based on are instructive moral tales. While some general cultural knowledge is shared, the specific details of the sacred and secret knowledge is reserved solely the Nyangbal people of Ballina.
  • Collaboration: The stories were written from extensive historical and cultural research to help piece together elements of Nyangbal heritage that have been deeply impacted by colonisation. This research was done in close consultation and conversation with local Nyangbal Elders to ensure accuracy, respect, and permission to share these narratives.
  • Benefit-Sharing: I believe deeply in reciprocity and acknowledging Indigenous Cultural and Intellectual Property (ICIP). While local Elders generously stated they did not want financial return, I am committed to ensuring the community benefits. 10% of all book sales is strictly set aside and held in trust. These funds are dedicated strictly to future local Nyangbal cultural, educational, or community-led initiatives as the community establishes unified pathways to receive them.

These books celebrate the rich history, culture, and Country of the Nyangbal people of the Bundjalung Nation, the Traditional Owners of the area encompassing Ballina, Richmond River, and the surrounding coastline.

The project consists of three individual titles that form a continuous series, as well as a single, comprehensive compilation book:

  • ‘The Magpie and the Snake’. Book 1 (Young Adult / Adult): Focuses on cultural foundation and identity. This book includes a comprehensive Study Guide and is currently proud to be embedded in the curriculum of 9 schools across Australia.
  • ‘Gawngan and the Marriage Tree’. Book 2 (Children / All Ages): A highly accessible story designed to introduce younger readers—as well as young adults and adults—to Nyangbal culture.
  • ‘Savages’. Book 3 (Mature Young Adult 15+ / Adult): Explores the brutal truth of early colonial history on Country. It contains some graphic scenes reflecting real historical events and is recommended for mature readers.
  • ‘The Coming of the Yiirraali’. The Compilation Book: Contains all three books in one single volume.

The core mission of this series is dual-fold: to build a bridge of reconciliation between non-Indigenous and Indigenous Australians, and to help reconnect local youth with their incredible heritage.

Beyond the pages of the books, the ultimate vision is to see these stories used as a catalyst for local empowerment. I hope the series can eventually serve as a foundation for local, community-led cultural tourism in Ballina, creating jobs, fostering pride, and allowing the Nyangbal mob to reclaim, launch, and celebrate their vibrant culture on their own terms.
